Toast

http://hk.myblog.yahoo.com/siu82english/article?mid=18865

Toast /təʊst/

在婚宴裡,伴郎伴娘,或雙方家長,都可能在賓客面前舉杯,說一些祝賀的話,這叫 to propose a toast,也可叫 to make a toast。

婚宴中最重要的 toast,往往是伴郎(best man)說的,稱為 the best man's toast。 I would like to propose a toast to the happy couple.

Ladies and gentleman, I'd like to say a few words about the bride and groom.

Here's to the bride and groom. May you have a lifetime of love and happiness.

I would like to take this opportunity to say a word or two about Martin.

As far as I'm concerned, my daughter could not have chosen a more delightful, charming, witty, responsible, wealthy, well-placed, good-looking, and fertile young man, than Martin as her husband.

And I therefore ask the question: Why the hell did she marry Gerald instead?!

Gerald?!

I'd like to propose a toast to the bride and groom.

@fongyun - 牛津大學出版的 Oxford An A-Z of Food & Drink(by John Ayto)這樣寫:

Toast, 'drink someone's health', also an early eighteenth-century development, seems to have come from the practice of naming a lady to whom an assembled company of gallants drank 'toast' - the notion being that metaphorically she flavoured their drink as agreeably as pieces of spiced toast did.

網上字源庫 etymonline.com 亦引同一典故:

"a call to drink to someone's health," originally referring to the beautiful or popular woman whose health is proposed and drunk, from the use of spiced toast to flavor drink, the lady regarded as figuratively adding piquancy to the wine in which her health was drunk.
